«Water moves mountains»

In the new national park information point on the St. Bartholomä peninsula on Königssee, you can learn interesting facts about the dynamics in the mountains and the "water" habitat. It consists of 2 buildings (Jägerhaus & Holzstube) and an outdoor area with two play stations. These connect both buildings. The exhibition is free of charge, open all year round and staffed. It is aimed at newcomers to the National Park, interested visitors, families and an international audience (German & English). It is also barrier-free and wheelchair accessible.

Opening hours

The permanent exhibition in the Jägerhaus is open and staffed all year round and admission is free. The "cinema" in the Holzstube is only open during the summer months from May to October.

The new exhibition:

The permanent exhibition "Water moves mountains" is based on a tour in the old hunter's house with a corridor area and five rooms with many interactive, playful elements and simple technical equipment. The themed rooms are linked by the story of a drop of water that "travels" through the national park.

Introduction: Introduction to the National Park (aims/tasks), introduction to water topics, orientation exhibition
Room 1 In snow and ice: e.g. water in general, role of snow cover in the mountains, snow/ice as a landscape designer, glaciers in the NP, protection against avalanches (WWA)
Room 2 Now it's thawing: e.g. karst hydrology, K'lake catchment area, underground waterways, diversity of springs, caves, geology, importance of drinking water (WWA)
Room 3 Everything flows: including the water cycle, above-ground paths of water, interaction between rain and landscape (bed load), protective structures against floods/bed load (WWA)
Room 4 Life everywhere: Habitats on/in water, threats to aquatic biodiversity, NPS actions to protect/improve water bodies
Room 5 Journey through time: using the example of Königssee, historical, current and future developments/scenarios are presented that have influenced or could influence water bodies and the protected area (e.g. effects of the timber drift on mountain streams, tourism, traditional uses such as alpine farming/fishing/shipping, outlook into the year 2078 "100 years of NP" and 3078)

In the second part of the overall exhibition, visitors are immersed in the "Wonderful World of Water in the National Park". A 12-minute film is shown in the "cinema", with spectacular footage under, above and beside the water.
