Experience live the first weeks of young bearded vultures in a release niche
In cooperation with the National Park and the Nuremberg Zoo within the framework of the EEP, the LBV will release 2 to 3 young bearded vultures in the Klausbach Valley in each of the coming years - for the first time in the summer of 2021. On June 10, 2021, the first two young birds named Bavaria and Wally were released in a rock niche in the Berchtesgaden National Park. Dagmar and Recka followed in 2022. The Alpine-wide reintroduction of the once native bearded vulture is considered a unique example in international nature conservation.
The proven "hacking" method is used, in which 2-3 young bearded vultures are brought into a well-protected reintroduction niche at the age of approx. 90 days and cared for there. With a survival rate of 88% in the first, and even 96% in the second year of life, this procedure is extraordinarily successful.
With two live webcams, anyone interested can follow the two young bearded vultures live in the reintroduction niche.
After the departure from the niche, which usually takes place about four weeks after the release at the age of about 120 days, the birds stay for a certain period of time in the surroundings of the release niche, because there we continue to put out food in natural structures (e.g. avalanche and rockfall gullies) and the independent search for food is to be trained. During this period, which can last from a few weeks to mid-October, they can only be seen sporadically in front of the webcam before they finally leave the immediate release area.
